TikTok joins Ad Net Zero

Following a year of progress on our sustainability journey, we are happy to announce our global commitment to Ad Net Zero; we're hopeful that this partnership will chart a new journey towards a greener advertising industry.

Ad Net Zero is a climate action programme that helps the advertising industry tackle the climate emergency by decarbonising ad operations and supporting verticals to accurately promote sustainable products and services. Their five-point action plan provides our industry with a roadmap for action in the transition to net zero.

Partnering for success

Our support sees TikTok join Ad Net Zero’s Charter Steering Group, affirming our ambition to follow their Action Plan. As part of the Charter Steering Group, TikTok will also be supporting the launch of future national Ad Net Zero Chapters as they are founded.

This new partnership builds on TikTok's continued work with IAB Europe's Sustainability Standards Committee, a group with the ambition of determining measurement standards pivotal in driving collective progress in the digital advertising industry, and the Global Alliance for Responsible Media's (GARM) Sustainability Working Group, which is developing the frameworks needed to effectively measure advertising emissions.

Climate Action

This announcement follows a year of significant progress in establishing our own sustainability credentials. In March 2023, TikTok, as part of ByteDance, announced our commitment to operational carbon neutrality by 2030, which we plan to achieve by reducing our operational emissions by 90% and tackling the remaining 10% through high quality carbon offsets.

We have also committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity for our global operations by 2030; our new data centre in Norway will run on 100% renewable energy. This data centre forms part of our ongoing commitment to build a specially-reinforced protective environment around our European user data. You can find out more about our commitment, named Project Clover, here.

Simultaneously, we're decarbonising emissions across the rest of our value chain and are committed to setting a specific and science-aligned target for these Scope 3 emissions.

Sustainability through progress

In 2023, we also implemented a new climate change misinformation policy and launched a new $1M initiative to tackle climate misinformation in support of Verified for Climate, a joint program of the United Nations and Purpose.

In addition to the work we're doing ourselves, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the impact of the communities who use TikTok every day. Content with popular hashtags #ClimateChange, #ClimateAction and #SustainableLiving have been shared over 750,000 times on our platform to date, with videos sharing tips and tricks for greener living, advice on assessing the validity of green claims and information for people looking to support positive climate causes.
