The 1993 Campbell Conference Finals between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Los Angeles Kings was played on May 27, 1993 and was pivotal as Toronto led the series 3-2 and was looking to close out the series to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals. Tied 4-4 in a next goal wins overtime situation, controversy occurred when Wayne Gretzky of the Kings high-sticked Maple Leafs’ captain Doug Gilmour, cutting his chin. Despite blood clearly showing, referee Kerry Fraser did not call a penalty on Gretzky. Less than a minute later, Gretzky scored the game-winning goal, forcing a Game 7, where the Kings ultimately won. This non-call infuriated Leafs fans and remains a sore point in Toronto’s hockey history, as it potentially cost them a chance at the Stanley Cup. The Kings advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens. To this day Toronto has not made the Stanley Cup finals in 57 years, but this penalty might have have turned things around and given them a chance to win their first Stanley Cup since 1967.
