3 Mistakes I made when I first started beading… 1. Buying low quality beads that were inconsistently sized which made for a struggle for brick stitch and made everything look wonky. Now I am a loyal Miyuki round (and sometimes Delica) user. 2. Not conditioning or stretching my thread before beading. This lead to sagging over time, thread gaps in my fringe, improper tension, and a ton more knots. I use wax (typically beeswax) or preconditioned thread to avoid these issues, and always stretch my Nymo thread before beading. 3. A huge mistake I made when I first started out was copying other artists designs. This is a huge no no, yet very common. As easy as it is to count beads in a design you found on Pinterest, it is highly unethical and actually illegal in some circumstances. Now, I design my own beadwork, taking inspiration from other artists, but not copying. And I find inspiration from other mediums and sources such as painting and nature. If you’re struggling with designs, there are tons available on Etsy! I’d love to hear your current beading struggles or mistakes you made when you first started.
