Derek Jeter was drafted 6th overall in 1992, making his Spring Training debut with the Big League club one year later at the age of 19. Once the regular season began, the young prospect was sent back to the Greensboro Hornets of the Class A South Atlantic League, where he could continue to develop. After struggling in 1992, Jeter excelled in the Minors in 1993, hitting .295 with five home runs, 71 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases. He finished second in the SAL with 11 triples and third with 152 hits. For his efforts, Jeter was named the SAL’s "Most Outstanding Major League Prospect.” Jeter continued to improve in 1994, spending time in Class A, AA, and AAA ball while hitting .344 across all three levels. Jeter made his MLB debut in May of 1995, filling in for an injured Tony Fernandez. In 48 Big League at-bats that season, Jeter hit .250. In 1996, Jeter became a full-time starter winning the AL Rookie of the Year award and helping lead the Yankees to victory in the World Series. 👉 Anthony Volpe made his professional debut yesterday at shortstop in the Bronx.
