Figure skating gets more expensive with every new chapter I open 😩 Being transparent so other ice babies just starting their competition journey aren’t as confused and surprised as I was when signing up lol ⛸ Private Lessons ($180): My coach charges $45 for a 30 minute lesson and I took 4 lessons with her leading up to my competition day. This is where she taught me my routine and helped with the elements in my program I was struggling with. *Not all coaches charge this for privates, it varies, but this is on the higher end I believe. Some coaches charge extra to create the choreography and to cut your music for you. I cut my music myself to cut costs a bit lol & some coaches also charge a fee to be there at the competition with you and help warm you up and put you on the ice. I opted out of that as well. Competition Dress ($280): My dress was custom from Skating Spirit on Etsy & was originally $319 (I paid extra to expedite it because I only started prepping for this competition a month and a half before comp day 😅) but since they didn’t make it how I ordered they lowered the price to $280 to compensate. *This wasn’t a terribly expensive price. Some dresses can cost over $500 and sometimes over $1,000 😭 BUT there are definitely less expensy stock options under $200 on Amazon, Light in the Box, and other websites. Skate Sharpening ($7): One of my local rinks charges $7 for skate sharpening. I’d recommend getting your skates sharpened about a month or so before your comp. Not too close though in case you need a few sessions to dull them out lol. I got mine sharpened about 2 months before and they were pretty dull by time I competed since I was practicing so often. Next time I’ll get them sharpened 1 month before. Ice Time ($330): I normally practice about 2-3 days a week, but I bumped it up to 5 days a week once I signed up for this competition. I don’t think it’s necessary to practice that much leading up to your competition, but I’m insane and I only gave myself a month and a half to prepare so I felt like I had practice as much as possible 😭 I practice during public skate and typically my rinks charge about $12-$14 (depending on which rink I’m skating at) It’s best if your rink has a monthly pass so you can get a better bang for your buck! Competition Entry Fee ($134): This fee can vary. I know different competitions can cost more or less, but this is how much mine cost. If you sign up for more than one category in a competition there will be another fee, but every additional category is typically less than the first. ALSO for my competition I had to be enrolled into a figure skating club which is a yearly fee of $150. I’m not sure if you have to be enrolled for every competition though, like if your local rink hosts their own.. but don’t quote me on that! Lol Being a part of a club (for me) includes free club ice once a week, monthly events with snacks 😋, the ability to test and the ability to compete. I think there are other benefits, but those are the ones I’m focused on. Needless to say my anxiety isn’t the only reason I’ll be waiting a bit before I compete again 😅 Feel free to ask anything I may have missed in the comments!
