ok so I'm in trying something new here. overwhelmingly instagram used plastic bottles to fill large planters. I figured I would give this a try. I'm planting annuals, Mandevilla to be exact, so I'm not concerned with the boxes decomposing before the end of the season. They won't survive my zone 8a winter anyway. According to Google, you can also use upside down nursey planters, plastic bottles, pool noodles, Mulch, or packing materials. Did I miss one? Last year, I used a bag and some change of soil to fill the same planters on my front porch. This year, I used about half a bag. I would say that's that's a win! Have you tried this hack? I fill my large pots with a few of the plant containers to take up extra space at the bottom. Fill pots with dirt. Choose a color theme and pick your plants based on sunlight needed and group those together. Use the ‘filler/spiller/thriller’ method. Add a tall plant or grass to the middle of your plant (thriller) and then add in plants that trail (spiller) and colorful flowers/bushy grass (filler). These pots are pretty large, so I did two grasses and 4-5 colorful filler plants. Deadhead and 💦!

Did you know: Plants are sold by the size of the pot, NOT by how many plants are inside the pot! This happens to be a perennial (echinacea 🌸) in a 1 gallon pot, but it is actually three plants planted densely. Plant growers place multiple plugs (smaller plant) in a pot for numerous reasons: 1) Planting multiple plants ensures a fuller more even display, since not all plants grow evenly 2) Provide customers a larger display of plants sooner, since perennial grow slower 3) Extra plants guarantees a successful pot. If one plant fails, you still have the others Not all plants will tolerate manhandling, but if you can find younger plants that aren’t yet root bound together, the more successful you will be. This works for herbs and vegetables too, except I’d skip it for root veggies. This perennial pot usually retails for $15-25, so wouldn’t you rather have 3 plants in the pot than just one for the same price?
