What’s the best schedule for NPs? How many patients should you see? I had these same questions when I first became an NP. I’ve been an NP for 5 years now and I think I found the answer. The answer is …. it depends. In other words, there’s no golden number. It all depends on the NP and the employer. When I first started out in urgent care, I saw anywhere from 7-70 patients in a 12 hours shift. Since it was all walk-in, there was no real way to know how many patients I’ll see. Now that I’m working in an OB/GYN office and we see patients with appointments, it’s a bit more controlled. I say “bit” because my boss does leave for deliveries which throws a wrench in things. When you look for a job as an NP, you should ask your future employer what the expectations are because some are reasonable and others are not. Depending on what specialty and setting you want to work (inpatient vs outpatient), there’s a wide variance. I suggest asking other NPs in your specialty for a better idea of what their schedules look like. DM me if you want to know mine.😉 One golden advice I would give new NPs is to SPEAK UP. When I saw 50-70 patients a day in the urgent care as a NEW GRAD with complicated chief complaints like chest pain rolling in being the only provider on site.. I never spoke up. I assumed they would know by seeing how many patients were seen and by the OT I was accumulating for staying 3-4 hours after the last patient to finish up my charting. But assumptions will become the death of you. They will overlook things if it fits their agenda so SPEAK UP. #california #nursing #nurselife #np #nursepractitioner #keephustlin #nplife #womenshealth #obgyn #nursingisthebest #nursehumor #fnp
