This is the most iconic plantation in Louisiana. It’s Oak Alley near New Orleans and it’s known for its picturesque tree canopy which has appeared in many movies over the years. Visitors can tour the big house mansion built in the 1830s and explore the beautiful grounds of this national historic landmark. The plantation had an average enslaved population of about 115. Some were called “field slaves” and they worked the expansive cane fields. But Oak Alley had a higher than usual amount of “house slaves” who were tasked with things like cooking, cleaning, and childcare. Reconstructed slave dwellings show you what life was like for those who didn’t spend time in the big house. Despite the complex history, many people have been drawn to the beauty of the plantation over the years with many weddings and other special events taking place.
