Replying to @katronmorgan #greenscreen Examining #Washington’s population map! #Washington (often called #WashingtonState to distinguish it from #WashingtonDC, the nation’s capital) is the 13th most populous #state with about 7.8m residents. Its largest #city, #Seattle, is home to about 700,000 residents, while its #metro area, which includes other large cities like #Tacoma, #Bellevue, and #Everett, is home to slightly over 1/2 of the state. #Olympia, the state capital, ranks 21st in size among Washington cities, the lowest ranking of any state capital, and #Vancouver Washington sits directly across the #ColumbiaRiver from #Portland, in #Oregon. Eastern Washington is surprisingly more populated than Eastern Oregon, despite having a similar climate, with major cities including #Spokane (and its large suburb, #SpokaneValley), #WallaWalla, the #tricities of #Kennewick, #Pasco, and #Richland, and #Yakima, while much more similarly to Oregon, the #Pacific #coastline is almost entirely unpopulated. This is because Washington’s coast is extremely cloudy and rainy, hosting the #USA’s only #rainforest, the #Hoh, located in/around #Olympic #NationalPark. Washington’s least populous county is #Garfield, and the state has two #island #counties, #IslandCounty and #SanJuan #county, the latter of which can only be reached via #ferry, with Washington hosting the most robust, busy ferry system of any state in the country due to the difficulties of building bridges over the #PugetSound. Finally, near #Blaine and #Bellingham, #PointRoberts is an exclave of the #US, a peninsula within the state that can only be reached by crossing the border twice with #Canada.
