This year, I’m growing tomatoes in a @Vego Garden 9 x 2.5 (10-in-1) modular raised garden bed. Here’s how I did it: 1. Preparing the Bed: After digging a hole, I added slow-release tomato fertilizer and worm castings. Usually, I also add Epsom salt, but not this time. 2. Planting the Tomatoes: Before planting, I gently tease the roots if they’re a bit tangled. Then, I plant the tomatoes deep for strong root development. I remove lower leaves to prevent soil-borne diseases. Finally, I water, mulch, and support the plants. 3. Companion Planting: I’m trying 18 tomato varieties in one bed, along with okra, lemongrass, basil, marigolds, onions, and amaranth. Planting densely maximizes space and yield. I choose companion plants based on: - Different nutrient and sunlight needs. - Benefits like marigolds and basil for tomatoes. - Shade tolerance, like amaranth. 4. Spacing: I planted 1 per squarefoot and eventually I will prune the tomato leaves for good air circulation to prevents diseases and pests. 5. Supporting Tomatoes: I’ll show you how I support them in an upcoming video.
