Raising a well mannered city pup can be challenging especially when you’re constantly around distractions. Whether you live in the city or are taking your pup there to expose them to a new setting, it’s a great place to practice some new skills. Here are some things you can try: 🧡auto-sitting before crossing the street—this one is important for safety! We usually practiced this when it wasn’t busy out and you can also practice with the curb as a natural boundary 🧡walking on different surfaces—the city is a great place to practice this with things like grates, rocks, turf etc. 🧡elevator manners—before entering, we like to have her away from the door and in a heel just in case there are people or dogs exiting the elevator as soon as the doors open. Inside then elevator, practice having your pup heel against you and the wall of the elevator. This helps when there are other dogs or people riding with you. 🧡exposure to sounds—ever since Blu was little, we tried to leave the windows open as much as possible for city noise desensitization (lots of YouTube videos too). We also always carry her meals and treats on our walks. When there’s a loud noise, like a truck passing by, dogs barking, or a skateboarder, we try to pair it with food. It’s easier if you can anticipate it happening since you can start feeding before the sound, and reward for eye contact back to you. Sometimes she won’t take food if she’s too overwhelmed, so in that case I’ll stop and pet her. Good luck pawrents! One tell-tale sign that your city dog is overwhelmed on walks: they don’t use their nose to sniff and explore the world around them. Watch your dog the next time they’re out on a walk. If they’re “all eyes”, they may be feeling fearful, anxious, or otherwise uncomfortable.
