I used to think carbohydrate loading was simply eating a large pasta dinner the night before your race. While this can be helpful, a true carb load means increasing your carbs for more than just one meal. Eating 8 grams of carbs per kilogram of body weight, for 3 days, can help you fully stock your glycogen stores. Why carb load? Carbs are the quickest source of energy for your muscles. They are fast burning (compared to fat which is slow burning). When you carb load, you’re stocking your glycogen (carb) stores in your liver and muscles. This energy is readily available to use on race day. When fully stocked, your body can store up to 90 to 120 minutes worth of glycogen. If you want to avoid ‘hitting the wall’ in your marathon, this is only half the equation. You also need to make sure you’re taking in enough carbs during the race.
