When I was five, we redecorated our playroom. Mum let me and my brother draw all over the old paint while we waited for the decorator to start. There were pirates and naughts and crosses and squiggles galore; total creative freedom with no consequences. Hiding those sketches beneath the new paint was like our little secret; you couldn’t see them anymore, but we knew they were there forever. Yesterday, over 20 years later, I invited my mum over to my own home to draw all over the walls of my mid-renovation art studio before I started painting, just like when I was a kid. It was a beautiful full circle moment and I am so grateful to have been able to share that with her again.
