While manatees are capable of sleeping underwater, they cannot hold their breath for extended periods like some other marine mammals. When they are asleep they need to breathe more often in comparison to when they are swimming and grazing under water! They usually rest near the surface of the water with their nostrils just above the waterline, allowing them to breathe easily 😴

Manatees are vulnerable to respiratory diseases, which can be caused by pollution, red tide, or other environmental factors. These diseases can affect their ability to breathe and can be life-threatening.

Lion monitoring might seem boring but not with us! Yes lions can sleep up to 20hours a day but we still get valuable data from them.
At least once a week we go out to find the lions - always hoping to find them on a kill, which gives us valuable data about prey preferences. Even if we don‘t find them on a kill, it gives us a lot of data about behaviour, pride structure, health status, habitat preferences and much more.
