This instrument, which is rather curiously called the “what-a-shame,” was invented by the prolific american instrument maker Bart Hopkin (see www.barthopkin.com). Bart published the magazine _Experimental Musical Instruments_ for 15 years (which is a treasure trove for those with adventurous ears) and has published numerous books on instrument making. To my knowledge, Bart does not make instruments for other people very often, usually just making them for himself to play. But he kindly agreed to make this interesting and unusual instrument for me in 2020.
