Incredible geological and biological diversity make Ross Maxwell Big Bend National Park’s most famous scenic drive, ending with a hike into the Rio Grande-carved Santa Elena Canyon. Only 12 miles roundtrip, Chisos Basin Road winds through the Chisos Mountains, the southernmost mountain range in the continental U.S. More rock, river and a hike to another spectacular gorge await on a drive and hike to Boquillas Canyon. Outside of Texas, South Padre Island is better known as a big-time spring break destination. And in the summer, it’s deathly hot and humid. But during the fall and winter, a road trip to this sub-tropical paradise at the southern tip of Texas comes alive with peace, quiet and some of the prettiest beaches and most succulent seafood anywhere. You’ll also want to visit Sea Turtle Inc. which rescues, rehabilitates and releases injured sea turtles. And plan to walk the wetland trails at the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary. South Padre is a subtropical barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a 6½ hour drive from Houston and lies about as far south as Miami. September to February is the best time to visit.

The final Big Bend road trip starts just outside the national park in Terlingua, an old mining town with an artistic vibe where old relics thrive. As Highway 170 pushes northwest, the road narrows. Sandwiched between rock and river, El Camino del Rio is one of the most picturesque drives in Texas. And while not in the nearby national park, the highway runs through the southern part of Big Bend Ranch State Park, Texas’ biggest state park. Hoodoos are pinnacles of weathered rock. In this case, volcanic ash eroded over time. While volcanoes created the mountains, the Rio Grande carved the canyon. It also forms the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico which El Camino del Rio follows for 50 miles.

It’s by design that the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive is considered to be Big Bend’s most beautiful road. It’s named after the park’s first superintendent, Ross Maxwell, who was also a geologist. He developed the route to showcase the national park’s exceptionally diverse landscape. Located on Big Bend’s western side, the drive’s 31 miles end with a one-mile hike into Santa Elena Canyon. Carved by the Rio Grande, the canyon forms a majestic international boundary between the U.S. and Mexico. Super-hot summers mean the mild winter, fall and spring are the best seasons for a Big Bend road trip.

Chisos Basin is the second must-drive on a Big Bend road trip. Big Bend is a BIG park and takes more than one day to explore. Even so, Chisos Basin is just 12 miles roundtrip and can easily be included with the much longer Boquillas Canyon and Ross Maxwell scenic drives. This route cuts through the heart of Big Bend, offering sublime views of the Chisos Mountains. Reaching a height of 7,825 feet, the Chisos are the southernmost mountain range in the continental U.S. Plan on 2-3 days to drive and hike Big Bend.

There are four awe-inspiring road trips in Big Bend. This story features the eastern route, ending at Boquillas Canyon. My first jaw-dropping stop was shooting video of turkey vultures warming their wings. Continuing south on US 385, the highway enters Big Bend National Park. I’ve been to 50 of the USA’s 63 national parks and this is one of my favorites. Unlike most of Texas, Big Bend is mountainous. The Rio Grande is the park’s other magnificent feature. It also forms the international border. The eastern route ends after a short hike into Boquillas Canyon.
