❓Anyone else with a talented kid who has decided against traditional lessons?
I posted this on TikTok a year or so ago and most of the advice was to put him in lessons. I ended up deciding against it because he didn’t want to. He loves music, but as a way to blow off steam. I’m letting him lead the way on this. 💗 Music is his therapy.
Cost-effective ways we’ve encouraged his love of music:
- Borrowed an electric bass (before buying one of our own)
- Encouraged (okay bribed) him to perform in front of people since he won’t be doing recitals.
- Built his music knowledge/library with playlists and trips to the library CD area
- Found some other kids with similar interest in music to jam with
- Sent him to a @schoolofrock summer camp, rather than monthly lessons (which are not a time/financial priority right now)

When I graduated, I basically gave myself a business education. I started my private music studio and interviewed music business owners.
I had to learn marketing, sales & operations.
I tried a lot of different things to grow my music studio. A few things worked:
+referral partnerships
+improving enrollment process
+networkings with other teachers
+school visits
And a ton of things didn’t work for me:
-paid ads
-losing focus
-website designing
-begging for students
