Solarizing your lawn is the easiest and usually most productive way to kill turf grass. This is because solarizing both heats and dries the grass to kill it and shades it from the sun completely, hindering root growth. We like to use a combination of cardboard, soil, and mulch - we’ve even used an old natural fiber carpet before it was going to be thrown away! We generally do this in the fall and let it stay until the following spring. But you can also solarize during the growing season by mounding soil high over the cardboard and planting within those “raised” mound beds! This generally hinders the growth enough to completely kill the grass beneath in much the same fashion. #solarizing #lawnrenovation #lawnreplacement #lawnsaredone #lawnalternatives
This is a whole ecosystem of native flora and fauna - it’s not going anywhere! Truly, it should be us asking them to get rid of their lawns and put in native plants - or at least something more beneficial than turf grass, which is mostly pointless.
There are so many better options from native grasses and sedges, to ground-covers, to reducing your lawn as much as possible and putting in a high diversity of native plants (best option). All of these options are far more beneficial and are way less maintenance! Grass uses so much time, energy, water, gas, chemicals, and money - and because of its thatched roots, water can’t percolate down into the soil well causing countless issues. It also provides puny benefits to the surrounding ecosystem - it actually can harm it with the runoff from pollutants. Want to learn more about reducing, removing, and/or replacing your lawn? We can help!
We create ecosystem boosting and carbon sequestering landscapes that restore key habitat to your region and build resilience in the face of climate change. 🐝🌺🌿🦋🌱🌻🍄🍁🐿 #nativeplanttok #habitatrestoration #nomowing #lawnsaredone #beescaping #nativeplantsplease
