🚨⛺️ Around 9AM March 15th Ian and I were told by the local police that we had 20 minutes to pack our stuff and head to the top of Havasu Falls due to a flash flood.
🌊We had to hike about a mile through flooded campgrounds to get to higher ground. We got there around 10:15 AM. All the bridges to town and out of the area were flooded or washed away. We had no way of leaving.
🃏We waited for more information regarding the flood and the severity of it. It was pretty calm and chill until 4PM. People were playing frisbee, cards, Ian and I napped, and some were getting food from a local food vender. #frybread
🗣️There were about 300 people, and many rumors were circulating. “There’s gonna be a tsunami”, “we’re not safe here”, “run like your life depends on it”, “it’s not serious”, and more. Just a lot of confusion and miscommunication.
🧗♀️At 4PM there was screaming from the top of the cliff saying we all needed to rock climb/scramble up the side of the canyon as a way out. Ian and I decided to leave, and so did many others. Some people stayed.
🛻Local tribe members came with ATVs and transported all of us to their town which was safe from the flooding. Some people were able to get a helicopter out that day, but people like Ian and me had to camp out in the village until they could send more helicopters in the morning.
🆘We saw two types of “survival mode” in people. One:let’s help everyone and work as a team to get out. Two:fend for yourself. All very understandable in such an unpredictable situation.
🚁I woke up at 5AM to ensure a spot in line to get out along with some other amazing groups. It was a small community of great people that all helped each other get to safety.
Sadly, we didn’t get the trip we waited 3 years for, but it was definitely memorable.
