You’ve heard of Milkweed but chances are you have not heard of Curtiss’ Milkweed, Asclepis curtissii. When in bloom it has a very beautiful cluster of white and green flowers with tiny purple specks. It is a very rare, Florida endemic, endangered species that is only found in Scrub habitat. I think this may be the last population in Broward, but I’ve only seen two plants in this location and I’ve never seen them produce seed pods. They may be in one more location in the county, but when not in bloom it could be confused with other scrub species like a seedling Myrtle Oak or hidden among Gopher Apples. They are not in cultivation. It’s a shame that we could not spare one of the many parking lots, same stores on repeat every few blocks, or empty mowed roadside areas for restoring endangered habitats. Broward County has lost so many plant species already (Quercus pumila, Pinguicula pumila, Asclepias lanceolata, Carya floridana, Coreopsis floridana, to name a few).
