After 10 years of struggling with my cycle, I got diagnosed with endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus. Symptoms can vary, but it is typically characterized by severe and heavy pain and bleeding. It remains heavily under-diagnosed, and most women only find out they have it when trying to get pregnant or once it has caused more complications requiring surgery. I always knew something wasn’t right about my period, but according to my GP my pain and bleeding weren’t serious enough so I thought I was overreacting. You know your body better than anyone, and if something isn’t feeling right for you, please get it checked. If your doctor won’t listen, go again or try a different one. Fortunately my endometriosis is treatable without surgery, but the earlier you get diagnosed, the less complications you’ll most likely have. We don’t always get taken seriously, and the cultural taboo on discussing reproductive health does not help. Our pain is real and we have to advocate for ourselves. There is so much more I could say.
