A timer is not a useful tool for all families. For some kids, it may be anxiety provoking. But for some, it is a REALLY useful tool. If your kids have a hard time sitting at the table and they thrive using visual reminders, a timer may be just the thing you need! But when using the timer it is very important that it is used for sitting at the table (or even standing nearby the table or sitting on the floor next to the table), NOT requiring any amount of food to be consumed.
I especially like this strategy if you find your kid being distracted by playtime, but then being hungry right after dinner is served. This situation I just described does have a lot of nuance though (which I have covered in previous videos) including making sure there are safe foods on the plate, the environment is appropriate and comfortable for the child to eat in, meeting your child’s sensory needs, and other medical/emotional/physical needs have been met.
Ultimately, it is important to listen to our child and their hunger cues. And we can absolutely do that WHILE also setting respectful boundaries that are unique to each family’s needs!
