Despite being born without a right hand, Jim Abbott was a standout pitcher and quarterback in high school, the 1988 Big Ten Athlete of the Year as a pitcher at the University of Michigan, and a 10-year MLB veteran.
Winner of the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States, Olympic Gold medalist Jim Abbott was selected 8th overall by the California Angels in the 1988 MLB Draft. He joined the team’s starting rotation one year later, in 1989, without tossing a single inning of Minor League ball.
Abbott had his best season in 1991, going 18-11 with a 2.89 ERA while finishing third in the AL Cy Young award voting. Over ten seasons with the Angels, Yankees, White Sox, and Brewers, Abbott won 87 games with a 4.25 ERA.
