Happy #TipTuesday feat. Sophia and Hygromas! 🩺 🐶👩⚕️
A Hygroma is a fluid-filled swelling surrounded by a thick capsule of fibrous tissue that develops under the skin that occurs in response to repeated trauma to the tissue over a bony prominence. Most commonly, the elbow is the site for hygromas to develop from the repeated trauma of lying down on hard surfaces, (especially from large breed dogs) — hardwood, tile, or concrete floors — can produce an inflammatory response in the tissue under the skin over the elbow. If the trauma continues, the hygroma will grow larger. In the worst case scenario, hygromas can become infected, in which case they are painful and must be dealt with aggressively. 😱
How are Hygromas treated?
✅ Drain the current Hygroma that is bothering the dog
✅ Prevent further trauma by providing bedding with adequate padding - MAJOR KEY - In areas where the dog enjoys relaxing, it is worth covering hard floor surfaces with interlocking foam tiles like the ones found in fitness clubs and day cares, or memory foam beds 🔑 ie. @bigbarkerusa
✅ Some elbow pads and balm designed specifically to protect hygromas can help, ie. @dogleggs elbow pads and @wellnergypets soothing balm 🙂
Hope this helps you guys out there with big dogs 🐶 and hard surfaces at home! Save and share to help a pet! And follow for more! 🩺🐶❤️
Also, shoutout to my nurse and student, Sophia, she’s learning something in the clinic everyday, she’s going to be a great veterinarian in the future! 🙂
