The famed plaster casts of Pompeii.
In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted in what must have seemed like the wrath of the Gods to the citizens of nearby Pompeii. Rocks and ash rained down on the Roman city burying and preserving it for the next roughly 17 centuries.
Contrary to popular myth, most of the residents of Pompeii did manage to escape this disaster. After all, there were likely many warnings before Vesuvius erupted. But the ones that stayed behind were completely buried. When Pompeii was eventually uncovered, the excavators found that while the bodies had long since decayed, they had left behind human shaped holes in the ash that had buried them.
Giuseppe Fiorelli in 1870 then came up with the brilliant idea of pouring plaster into these holes with the result that these ancient people were brought to life in their dying moments. That’s right, these are not petrified bodies but plaster casts of the spaces left behind by human bodies long since gone (though many bones did remain and in some of the plaster casts you can see the edge of a bone or skull protruding from the plaster). The casts are glimpses into the death throes of desperate people from antiquity clinging to their last moments of life. There is truly nothing else like it.
