Where to source your dahlia tubers? Small local flower farms, of course! Many smaller farms sell off their extra tubers in spring so reach out to a local flower farmer, ask if they’re selling an my extras (and buy a community supported agriculture share for bouquets all season long if they offer one!).
Make sure you are buying from their stock and not divisions of imported tubers, which tend to have higher rates of dahlia diseases like leafy gall.

Remember, just because someone has “farm” in their business name does NOT mean they are growing their own flowers. Always ask where flowers are sourced—it’s not pretty.
While there are signs of things getting better, especially for fair trade flowers, there is still a massive environmental footprint to consider—not only on the planet as a whole but on the communities where these greenhouses are located which deal with water issues (such as lake navaisha, where water is scarce and is being pushed to greenhouses at the expense of local communities—each rose takes 3 gallons of water to produce) also including pesticide contamination of water supply.
