Suicide & self-harm

TikTok Cares

TikTok is a positive and supportive community. We hope that the dances, songs, cute animals, scenery, and comedy can bring happiness to people on our platform.

But sometimes, loneliness and stress are hard to avoid. If you or someone you may know are having a tough time or contemplating self-harm, we want you to know that we are here to help.

What TikTok is doing to support and protect our community

The safety and well-being of the TikTok community is our top priority. Our policies aim to support people who may be struggling and provide access to expert emotional help.

  • We do not allow content depicting, promoting, normalising, or glorifying activities that could lead to suicide or self-harm. We also do not permit TikTok community members to share content depicting them partaking in, or encouraging others to partake in, dangerous activities that may lead to serious injury or death. However, we do support members of our community sharing their personal experiences with these issues in a safe way to raise awareness and find community support. Learn more
  • We will not show self-harm related content when searching related terms. Instead, we want to support our community by providing resources and access to emotional support helplines. We surface regional suicide prevention hotline numbers and additional localised resources that can help.
  • TikTok works with emotional health experts to continually improve our policies and approach.
  • In the event that our intervention could help a TikTok community member who may be at risk of harming themselves, the TikTok team may also alert local emergency services.

To better support our community, TikTok partners with experts to develop toolkits for everyone to learn more about improving their well-being, and to build a supportive online community. Learn more
