Is anyone else fed up with the term woke being deliberately misinterpreted and weaponised? The Conservative government, backed up with our right wing media, are resorting to culture wars to try and blame their incompetence on anyone but themselves. When it’s not people on benefits or immigrants or those with mental health problems being blamed, it’s the woke. The other week Tory MP Penny Mourdant declared she would ban woke language in parliament. The same Parliament where over 50 MPs are under investigation for sexual harassment. Where James Cleverly jokes about drugging his wife. Where MPs make decisions on policies that affect women, people of colour, and those with disabilities. Where Rishi Sunak makes jokes about women even with Brianna Ghey’s mum present. So to be clear, being woke is not a bad thing. We should all be Woke means being aware of social injustices - it’s trying to ensure that every citizen is humanised and has equal opportunities no matter who they are - whether wheelchair bound, or black or brown, or a non traditional family. Chestfeeding. No one is trying to remove the term breastfeeding. The nhs guidance is just when dealing with trans parents. It’s equipping people with language that is not offensive and makes that person included. Mum. No one is trying to get rid of the word mum or dad. But people are encouraged to use the term parent because lots of people don’t have a mum and a dad. They could be solo parents for various reasons - like my friend who adopted on her own. They could be from same sex families. It allows families and specifically children feel that their family is included when thinking about a family. The world is not worse off because of being woke. Trying to include people in society is not the reason our country is in the state it’s in. Take the Sarah Everard case where sexist language was allowed to go unchecked which allowed monsters like Wayne Couzens and David Carrick to hide in plain sight. The tories have been in power for so long that they can’t blame anyone else but themselves. So now they’re trying to make people worry about what might happen if wokeness takes over from the left. 😡
