It was a literary movement that emerged in the 20th century. It emphasised the exploration of the subconscious mind, dreams and the irrational.

Surrealist poets often employed unconventional imagery, unexpected juxtapositions and free association to create dreamlike and imaginative compositions.

They used a technique called automatic writing.

The person engaging in automatic writing enters a state of relaxed focus or trance and lets their thoughts and ideas pour out onto the page without actively thinking or directing the process.

The goal of automatic writing is to bypass conscious thought and tap into the deeper layers of the mind, accessing hidden thoughts, emotions, and creative impulses.

One prominent surrealist poet is Andre Breton | Free Union" (L'Union Libre) by André Breton:
