More in caption!👇👀 (btw I shoulda, woulda, coulda, worn gloves 🤦♀️) Ever wonder why oil painters let little mounds of paint build up on their palettes? The reason is because oil paint piles are still wet at the end of the day when you’ve finished painting. So artists usually clean that day’s mixes around them, off the palette. Then they leave the paint piles out to use again in their next painting session - topping up when necessary. Otherwise you’d have to pick up the paint piles, clean under them, and put them back each day. If you’re going to be away from the palette for 4+ days I recommend you put the paint piles in the freezer (see my previous videos) otherwise they’ll start to dry if you leave them out. Despite what it looks like most artists aren’t waisting much paint. It’s just that over the years even a tiny little layer of paint left out & not scraped away off the palette is gunna build up. Think of those 100 layers of nail polish videos but imagine 100 days of painting. That’s why I always scrape off any drying paint with a palette knife to avoid any build up & if the piles get too high I carefully cut the paint pile down with a knife. You can see in the video that there’s still wet paint at the bottom of this mound from years ago as it hasn’t been able to oxidize & dry. Especially on this pile which is where I put my mixes from each day’s painting session which tends to build up faster & can start to get in the way of my white. Ps.
