Mistakes new painter’s make & haw to avoid them! Part 1/4 The only true mistake a new painter can make is not painting. But there are habits that are more prevalent in newer artists (all of which I’ve been guilty of at some point 🙋‍♀️) that it’s useful to be aware of! 🖤🤍Using pure black/white. Even the brightest lights & darkest darks have some colour so keep a colour wheel nearby & use it to make chromatic shadows using complementaries or adjusting highlights (often with a bit of yellow to mimic natural light). 🌈 Using straight-out-the-tube colour. Nature is rarely intensely colourful. vibrant colour can be a stylistic choice but if you’re going for realism learn the beauty of using grey, brown, or complementaries to tone down colour, creating a sense of atmosphere & depth. 👩‍🎨 Using a small brush. Switch up your brushes, use the biggest one possible for the area you’re painting. It’s more efficient & leads to more dynamic brushwork. 😤 Over-blending. This is how you get muddy paintings. Instead mix transitional mid tones & ‘put colour down’ in the right spot. You’ll be surprised how natural this looks. Ps. There are no black & white rules for painting (pun intended🤭) which is difficult to convey in a short vid. Eg. one of my most successful vids is about why you shouldn’t use pure black paint but I never said there are no situations where u may knowingly prefer to use a black pigment. The key here is knowingly. If you’re educated about the potential outcome that come from a particular habit (aka. black paint lacks depth) & choose to still use it it is an educated choice not a mistake. To Splurge or to Save?! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤑 Wanna know where to invest and save on oil painting materials? 💰 Check out these tips for quality artwork without breaking the bank. Let me know in the comments which tip you found most helpful! ✨Splurge: Artist quality paint. It’s more concentrated, has less fillers so a few professional quality oil colours go a long way & makes your painting last longer. Quality over quantity! ✋Save: Brushes. Your money goes towards hair-type not quality - cheap synthetic brushes are just as good as natural but cost a fraction of the price. ✨Splurge: Gesso (or other surface prep) It's the foundation of your painting and effects it’s longevity. ✋Save: Canvases/Panels. Buy the raw materials like stretcher frames & raw canvas etc and save tons of money by building or stretching your own. The more you do yourself the cheaper it costs. Time is money. 🤑 ✨Splurge: H-Frame easel. IMO the best easel-style - the beefier the better! They range in price from 200$CAD to thousands. I always tell people it’s one of the most underrated investments!!! (Just remember to keep ceiling height in mind!) ✋Save: Palette. Replace disposable palettes for wax paper or glass palettes for a glass chopping board or any piece of glass like a picture frame or fridge shelf. U can even stick grey paper underneath! ✨Splurge: Solvent & oil medium. Buy proper painting mediums made for artists. I hear all the time from artists who use grocery or hardware store versions but they have unknown ingredients that can react to the paint. It’s better to go without solvent or oil medium at all than use cheap substitutes that aren’t made with painting in mind. ✋Save: Painting jars, rags, mahl sticks, & an oil safe garbage can which can all be DIY’d using recycled materials. This one is a personal favourite of mine for sure! The client gave me creative freedom on the background, so I actually set this reference up against white! White backgrounds really open up the possibilities when stretching colours! I am so happy with the overall vibrancy and composition, and the client adores this 🥰 also, I hope you guys find it informative when I share the prices of my work in the video! I like to be transparent on this point and I know a lot of aspiring artists get stuck on where to start when it comes to pricing. my best advice is to calculate based off of canvas area, if you can estimate roughly how long each size will take you.
