Replying to @scottd504 #greenscreen Examining #Louisiana’s population map! Louisiana is the 25th most populous #state with 4,593,627 residents. Its largest and most famous #city is #NewOrleans (aka #NOLA), home to about 400,000 people, with the #metro being home to around 1.5m people, including large suburbs like #Kenner, #Metairie, and #Gretna. Cross the world’s longest bridge, the #LakePonchartrain causeway, and you’ll end up in #Mandeville and #Covington, two more suburbs of NOLA, along with #Slidell if you go east on #i10. Go west on i10 from NOLA and you’ll end up in #BatonRouge, the state #capital and second-largest city, birthplace of #RaisingCanes (#popeyes if from NOLA). Keep going and you’ll find #Lafayette, home to the #UniversityofLouisiana (#UL), keep going and you end up in #LakeCharles. The #i20 corridor is home to (from east to west) #Monroe (4th in #LA), #Ruston, #Minden, and then #Shreveport (3rd in LA) and #BossierCity, along the #RedRiver, where you’ll find #Alexandria if you travel down it southeast from Shreveport. The #MississippiRiver ends (or begins) in Louisiana, near #Boothville, but NOLA is considered its mouth regardless, which has always made it a VERY important city to the #USA, since all river traffic going inland meets up at New #Orleans. The state was originally a #French posession, being sold by #France to the #US in 1803, but Louisiana retains much of its French heritage, such as the fact the state calls their counties ‘#Parish,’ uses #civillaw (instead of #commonlaw like the other 49 states), and the prevalence of ribbon farms throughout the state’s agricultural areas. Louisiana produces more #Crab than #Maryland, has more #gators than #Florida, and produces over 1/2 the nations #shrimp and nearly 1/4 of the nations #seafood. Louisiana also has massive offshore #oil resources, so its relatively confusing how the state remains one of the poorest in the nation, given its geographic advantages. The least populous parishes are #Tensas and #Cameron, with 4,000 and 6,000 people respectively.
