Our Oogie Boogie Halloween tree. A fun DIY project window decoration for trick-or-treaters. Instruction video will be in the comments. * Question? Please post in the comments. * Supplies: * 2 pkgs Burlap (40” x 24ft) * 16 oz polyester fiber fill or some other crafting filler for the lips and Hood * Back yarn and yarn needle * 1 yard Firm black fabric for mouth and eyes * Paper clamps, clear tiny hair claws or large paper clips. We have a large Xmas tree. Our Oogie is face only, to be seen thru our window. This project cost less than $80 and these instructions for the eyes, mouth and hood took about 8 hours. Oogie Boogie Halloween tree instructions: Create a drawing of the eyes on a paper pattern to decide on their fit / placement on your tree. The mouth smile should be 1-2 inches beyond the outer side of each eye. The eyes are like a flat sided teardrop shape. Then use the paper pattern to cut out on the firm black fabric. Outline the mouth to be proportionate to the eyes and then cut the mouth out. Remove any wrinkles from burlap fabric in the dryer. Any burlap that you cut, will need to be stitched at the edges to avoid fraying. Making each section: Eyes: Cut the shape and sew it in the center of a piece of burlap that is double the size of the eyes. Machine stitch two zigzag rows around the eyes approx. 2 inches away from black, then cut off excess burlap. Sew the edges of burlap to avoid fraying. Mouth: Cut the shape of the mouth and sew onto a section of burlap that is twice the height of the mouth and allow 6-8 inches at the sides. Pin the mouth to the burlap and sew close to the edges. Machine sew a zigzag stitch around the lips approx. 2 inches away, then cut excess burlap. Sew the cut edges of burlap to avoid fraying. Lips: Cut a piece of burlap approximately 5 inches wide. These will be sewn on the long side while being stuffed with the filler. You will need enough to go around the entire mouth. I used four sections and tucked in the ends to join my pieces. Place “lips” the burlap seam hidden on the larger section and around the mouth (if you have a long sewing pins to keep the mouth in place during this process , that would be handy) Use the yarn needle with black thread to put the lips in place around the mouth. Each black line of yarn was done separately and knotted on the back side. After the lips were in place, I took a regular large needle with tan thread and secured the lips to the back burlap by adding additional stitches to the tops and bottoms between the black stitches. Hood: Because our tree is large, I took two 3ft sections of the burlap and sewed them together to create one large piece. I folded it over to create a cone shape and sewed one side. On this seam, I used the black yarn to create the stitching look of Oogie’s head top. To this section add the filler. Then tuck in a large piece of white fabric or pillowcase so that when you put the hood on the tree, the foam filler doesn’t fall out or stick to the tree branches. I left the Hood section long, to cover more of the tree when it’s time to assemble the tree. We removed the top section of our tree and put the stuffed hood as the tree top. Assembly: Put the hood on the tree and make sure that it is balancing. Clip using paper clamps, hair claws or large paper clips to secure to the branches. Wrap the tree with remaining burlap. Start at the middle of the hood and work your way downward. Second layer of burlap, start at the base and work your way upward and overlap extra burlap. Place the eyes and mouth where you want them and then hand sew a loose stitch, needle and thread, just to keep them in place. This will make it easier to remove to save for next year. * #OogieBoogie #halloween #halloweentree #halloweendecorating #halloweendecor #nightmarebeforechristmas #halloweencrafts #DIYHalloween #diyhalloweendecor #halloweenproject #ilovehalloween
