WOW!! The people have spoken and they love flowers! ❤️ . I'm so happy to meet you! The reason I started this account was to show people that they can do it too! This garden may look intimidating and maybe you won't get this result the first year, but this is achievable, trust me. Like I said, I grew all of these from seed and planned out my garden over the long Yukon winter. Then I spent hours fussing over it and hoping for the best while I was gone (I did have hubby watering for me) and boy did she grow! . What surprised me most wasn't the volume of flowers (I knew I planted 300+ seedlings in June) but the height of some of them! Maybe it was the variety, maybe it was the Midnight Sun, either way, these babies put on a show that I will be forever grateful for. Last year, I just planted any flowers i thought were pretty- no plans, just plant. Some did great and some were huge fails. These 5 are definitely going back in the garden this year and are low-effort, high yield producers! 1. Cosmos: I planted the bright lights and xanthos (white cosmos). These produced more blooms, less greenery and the orange was so bright. Not great for cut flowers, but perfect for gardens or landscapes. 2. Zinnias. You could throw these seeds outside with your eyes closed and have blooms all summer. The more you cut them, the more they produce! 3. Amaranth! Looks like it’s from Horton Hears a Who! It grew SO FAST and lasted all summer. Very long lasting cut flower and looks great dried. 4. Gomphrena. I was obsessed with these little flowers and will be growing them in purple this year! Great as cut flowers and dried. The only change I’m making this year is starting the gomphrena indoors, but I had great success just direct sowing them. 5. Tithonia, also known as a Mexican sunflower. This flower grows big! Some plants were taller than I am, and I’m 5’11! They also grow wide, almost like a bush. Each plant has a ton of flowers and the pollenators love them! We had had butterflies June-October thanks to this. All of these flowers were directly sown last year and lasted all summer!! If I Were Starting A Cut Flower Garden For the First Time, This is What I’d Want to Know 🌸Start small. If you love it after the first season go bigger next year. 🌼Start your garden from seed. You’ll find so many more varieties and beautiful flowers to grow not limiting yourself to what is available at the nursery. 🌸Begin with easy flowers that are not difficult to germinate and are easy to care for. Think zinnias, strawflowers, celosia, sunflowers, snapdragons, Tithonia and calendula. 🌼Support tall varieties early. Growth happens fast! 🌸Pinch back plants like zinnias, dahlias, snapdragons, larkspur, etc. when they are about 8-12” tall. It’s tough to cut it back but the plant will be bushier and produce a lot more flowers if you do. 🌼If you grow a cut flower garden in containers, go with larger pots to accommodate the mature size of plants and won’t dry out as easily in the summer heat. 🌸Plant your cut flower garden in full sun. That means the location is getting at least 6-8 hours a day of sun. 🌼Fertilize your flowers - they need it to produce a lot of blooms all season long. 🌸Water the base of plants in the earlier part of the day and avoid overhead watering. 🌼Space plants according to seed packet directions and thin out those seedlings.
