Pre-Hispanic Aztec rituals tied to Mictecacihuatl, or the Lady of the Dead, who allowed spirits to travel back to earth to commune with family members, blended with the Roman Catholic observance of All Saints Day created what we celebrate today as Día de los Muertos. The marigold flower native to Mexico is crucial to remembrance alters. Marigolds aka cempasúchil, are known as the "flowers of the dead”. Their scent and their bright orange and yellow hues are said to attract souls. Our alter located in our Downtown Phoenix hotbox containers wouldn’t be complete without the help of the Hope Academy students and their leaders. We are thankful to Hope Academy for allowing us to spend an afternoon crafting flowers for our Dia De Los Muertos ofrenda located on Roosevelt Row. Our youth bootcamps provide opportunities for artists of all ages to learn from experienced instructors and master artists directly. In this case, our cartooning & drawing bootcamp aimed at 11-19 year olds on fall break provided the chance to experiment with inspired drawing and comic book design! Led by in Xico’s in house instructor Esai Calles, our hard working students learned the fundamentals of color theory, and the history of cartooning and character design. I believed it. I consider myself a cultural warrior. A lot of my artwork evolves around my culture, my beliefs, my background. I come from a farm working background so the working class is very important to me.
