Sophia Papamichalopoulos, one of the Women Lead Sports Leadership Master Program graduates, moved for peace on April 1, 2023 and believes sport is an excellent catalyzer for peace.

Sophia is an Olympic alpine skier who competed at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games together with her brother, and was Cyprus’ flagbearer during the closing ceremony. She is a medical doctor and surgical resident, yet remains engaged in sports and the Olympic Movement. She has contributed to the Athlete365 Space at the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang 2018 and was appointed member of the World Sailing Medical Commission. In her free time she volunteers for the Cyprus Girls Can campaign. Her dream is to see a bi-communal Cypriot team march into the Olympic Games under one flag.

Winds of Change is a project that aims to give rise to the first bi-communal Cypriot sailing team (including Greek and Turkish Cypriots) to sail around the divided island together. The project creates an opportunity for young people from all over the divided island to come together and join a journey with a common purpose. Ultimately, Winds of Change wants to challenge, empower, and inspire young people to connect, which in turn will contribute to peacebuilding in Cyprus. As part of the project’s outreach, and in order to reach a larger audience, the production of a documentary film is planned which will capture this unique and historic journey on screen. Showcasing this documentary on national and international events, but also through international broadcasters, Winds of Change aims to create a platform for dialogue and inspiration.
