If only it were as easy as snapping my fingers… it’s not. It took me nearly two hours to reclaim and wedge my clay this morning. It took another hour and thirty-eight minutes to throw seven pieces, of which only six made it. I also spent another two hours making and attaching handles and cleaning up. This video is over five hours of work condensed into a 19 second clip with some catchy music. Pottery is a process and an exploration of texture, angles, motion, and most importantly, patience. When hard work and luck collide you get something special like this!

You don’t truly learn something by doing it right every time. You learn by failing and then picking up the pieces. Today was a rough day. I only got 4 hours of sleep last night. I forgot to eat breakfast. I couldn’t focus and my ADHD distractibility was in overdrive. Trying to organize my pottery throwing flow was not happening. My brain was foggy and connecting thoughts was hard. I felt like molasses on a cold winter day. My body hurt and at one point my hip froze up. I kept getting my clay centered then knocking myself of center just enough to muck things up. I was moving too fast or too slow and constantly out of sync. Yet, today was a big win for me. I messed up and instead of scrapping it and starting over, I learned how to bring it back to center. This is 70 minutes condensed into a 35 second video. Pottery is teaching me how to fail a million different ways. It’s a powerful lesson especially as a burned out formerly gifted child late diagnosed AUDHDer with a perfectionism complex. I’ve let a fear of failure stop me from trying things I’m interested in. I sit and overthink the process and convince myself that if I am going to do it it has to be perfect. But it doesn’t.
