I have a confession to make.

I used to be terrified of eating any carbs.

Rice 🍚
Pasta 🍝
Bread 🥖
Potatoes 🥔

You name it, if it was starchy, I steered clear of it.

Most of us have been taught through our lives to label foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ That may not seem like a problem until you understand that those labels actually inform you how you should feel about yourself when you eat those foods.

Let’s put an end to this cycle because when we label foods as “bad”, it means we see ourselves as bad when we eat them. Linking our worth with what we’re eating is so problematic because of how it leads to not only guilt and shame, but also can contribute to yo-yo dieting. Labeling foods also completely messes up our connection with our bodies and with our hunger and fullness cues. I lived in this cycle for years and I have to tell you it’s no way to live.

If there’s anything I want you to take away from today, it’s that no matter what you’re eating, there’s some value. Maybe some foods have more nutritional value that others. But things like rice or even brownies, can bring mental and emotional value, like pleasure and connection when you eat them. By shifting your perspective to seeing the value a food adds, it allows you to shift from seeing a food as off limits or ‘bad’ to seeing it in a more neutral way.

Nowadays I include all foods in moderation and it’s given me so much more connection with my body and freedom with food, and the binges that used to happen never happen anymore. This sushi stack is the perfect well rounded meal and it wouldn’t be what it is without the rice 😋.
