Ultralight 1.2kg / 43oz wild camping setup, including tent & sleep system ⛺️ #tent #ultralight #quilt #backpacking #wildcamp #wildcamping #wildcampinguk #camping #sleepsystem
Full details of kit:
- Tent: Zpacks Offset Duo (587g / 20.7oz). A spacious 2-person trekking pole tent, made with DCF, very waterproof and packable. Designed to accommodate couples up to 6’6” and 2 wide sleeping mats, features include 2 zipper storm doors and a bathtub floor to keep you dry, 2 internal mesh doors to keep those insects away, peak vents for ventilation and strong magnetic door toggles. It has a 15,000mm hydrostatic head rating, requires 8 stakes to pitch, has pockets on either side and does not require a separate groundsheet due to a durable floor. 28g / 1oz in weight can be saved by using a 3rd trekking pole in place of the supplied pole. Expected lifetime is a 2,500+ mile thru hike or many years of casual use. £614 / $769
- Quilt: Zpacks Summer Quilt / Winter Liner (276g / 9.7oz). Incredibly light and with a small pack size, this quilt is designed for standalone use above 4C. When it gets colder, it can be used to layer your 3-season sleeping bag or quilt to boost overall warmth. Stated weight is for a standard-medium. £270 / $339
- Pillow: Zpacks Inflatable Pillow (40g / 1.4oz). Inflated with a few breaths, this crescent-shaped pillow adds extra comfort to aid your sleep. Optional attachment cord to secure this to your mat is recommended. £28 / $35
- Sleeping mat: Therm-a-Rest NeoAir UberLite (250g / 8.8oz). The lightest insulated air pad ever built. The pack size of this mat is ridiculously small, it has an R-value of 2.3 and is suitable for 3-season use. £176 / $230
- Stakes (8): 80g / 2.8oz.
Total weight: 1.2kg / 43oz
Total cost: £1,088 / $1,373
Verdict: A fantastic ultralight setup, I was barely aware that I was carrying a 2-person tent and full sleep system up those Lakeland fells. The space to weight ratio of the Offset Duo is superb. I found the summer quilt comfortable and just the right warmth for last week’s camp. The tent will be getting plenty of use, as will the quilt on those warmer nights.

Full details of kit:
- Tent: Durston X-Mid Pro 1 (475g). Designed for ultralight backpacking, this is a 1-person, 1-skin, 2-door, trekking pole tent made with DCF. Packed full of features including mesh doors, pockets half way up on both sides, magnetic fly door toggles and requires only 4 stakes for a basic pitch. It pitches easily with 2 trekking poles, suitable for those up to 6’8”, has plenty of room for wide mats and generous sitting room with a peak height of 114cm. An excellent, well thought out, ultralight, space-maximising 1-person tent. £466 ($599)
- Sleeping bag: Therm-a-Rest Hyperion 0C/32F (460g). One of the lightest pieces in its class, an ultralight 3-season sleeping bag with 900-fill down. 70% of the fill is on the top and sides, 30% on the back so one point to note is if you’re a side sleeper you may want to take a liner/sleep with layers in colder temperatures. I love this bag and have been using it regularly for 3+ years now. £361
- Sleeping mat: Therm-a-Rest NeoAir UberLite (250g). The lightest insulated air pad ever built. The pack size of this mat is ridiculously small, it has an R-value of 2.3 and is suitable for 3-season use. The WingLock valve toggles for one-way inflation to make setup a breeze. £176
- Pillow: Therm-a-Rest Air Head Lite (60g). Ultralight and compact enough to easily fit in your pocket, provides 10cm of air-padded comfort. A great choice! £35
- Tent stakes: MSR mini groundhog x 6 (60g). Smaller and 40% lighter than the standard groundhog stakes, these are ideal for soft ground. My go-to tent stake when I’m counting grams. £18
Total weight and cost: 1.3kg / £1,056
Verdict: A solid and comfortable 3-season ultralight setup for those who are serious about dialling in their kit for multi-day expeditions and thru hikes. It may be on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. I really like this tent and sleep system combo and have used it in varying conditions for several nights.

Ultralight 2.9kg wild camping setup, including tent & sleep system (Big Agnes) ⛺️ #wildcamp #wildcamping #wildcampinguk #camping #campinguk #ultralight #backpacking
Full details of kit:
- Tent: Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 Long (1.45kg). An ultralight, 3-season, freestanding 2-person tent, double-walled tent. Based on their best selling and award-winning Copper Spur. This long version adds 15cm of length and 10cm in height. It has 2 dual zipper doors, each with a vestibule and the awnings enable you to optionally pitch up the doors on trekking poles for extra sun and wet weather protection. Complete with over-sized ceiling and media pockets, low door vents and high fly vents for good airflow to reduce condensation. Perfect for taller people or if you’d like more head room and space for your kit/partner. The Copper Spur is one of the best freestanding tents on the market and I was impressed. By comparison, a regular Copper Spur is £87 cheaper. £527
- Sleeping mat: Big Agnes Zoom UL Insulated (25”x72”) (482g). With an R-value of 4.3, it is suitable for 3 season use. I found it comfortable and quiet. It is rectangular and has 8cm of cushioning. This wide version is great for side sleepers and I liked it. Having only 1 valve saves some weight but means it is slower to deflate. £210
- Sleeping bag: Big Agnes Lost Ranger UL 3N1 (-9C/15F) (992g). A really cool modular design 3.5 season sleeping bag which enables you to have 3 configurations. The inner bag is good down to 2C, the outer down to 10C and, when used together, -9C. The pad cinch system enables you to secure it to your sleeping mat for extra stability. One to consider if you’re looking to invest in a single sleeping bag for use throughout the year. £495
- Pillow: Big Agnes Rapide SL (45g). Provides a good night’s sleep and decent neck support. It has high tear and puncture resistance. Packs down tiny! £42
Total weight and cost: 2.9kg / £1,274
Verdict: A great setup! I was particularly impressed by the Copper Spur and would recommend researching it if you’re in the market for a decent freestanding tent. The sleep system was comfortable and good for side sleeping. A solid combination 👍

SUP adventuring with Red’s 11’0” Compact paddle board [ad]
Packing down to half the size of a conventional inflatable paddle board, the 11’0” Compact from Red is a full-sized touring SUP. It is an ideal match for those who are looking for an excellent all-round board and who regularly travel with their board.
Its 32” width offers very good stability and the weight capacity is generous. Despite its compact form, it’s also a sturdy, fast, manoeuvrable all-rounder, ideal for exploring and discovering new paddling locations.
I really liked how the board, paddle and rest of the kit fit into the supplied 75L backpack, making it truly portable. The board weight was only 9kg which made it easy to carry into and out of the water. I gained confidence on it quickly and was standing in no time. The bungee straps meant I was able to secure all of my camping kit in dry bags to the paddle board, making it a solid camping companion!
