Currently going through footage from this winter and got this nice footage of a black wolf traveling with a normal “gray" wolf. The pair appeared to be transient and not part of a pack in our area. There are no black wolves in any of the packs we are currently studying. In other words, the pair was just meandering around our area for a bit this winter before they likely moved on somewhere else. A super-duper, amazingly lucky trail camera capture: we finally caught a wolf hunting a beaver on video!!! Check it out! We cannot overstate how rare such observations are. Of course, you might think we are exaggerating here so let us explain… In 2015, Dr. Dave Mech—one of the world’s foremost wolf experts—and colleagues published a book which was a comprehensive overview on how wolves hunt various prey. We learned this winter that there is one wolf in the Cranberry Bay Pack who loves trail cameras…more specifically, loves to chew on trail cameras! You can see this little hellion coming in like a search-and-destroy missile in this video! And destroy it did! In fact, in early winter, this wolf found and chewed on almost every camera we had in the Cranberry Bay territory!
