Armenians are one of the very few Orthodox traditions to celebrate the nativity and baptism of Christ on the same feast day (January 6). This is because we believe they are one and the same. The first celebrates our Lord’s physical birth and incarnation into this world, and the ladder His spiritual birth. This fifth century Armenian hymn celebrates the good news of revelation of this great Mystery. WATCH FULL VIDEO on Vemkar’s YouTube channel.

As we are in the octave of nativity, we prepare ourselves for the ultimate celebration—the birth of our Lord!
Այսօր տօն է (Nativity Hymn)
Sung by Dn. Rubik Mailian, St. John Armenian Church (Southfield, MI)
This day is the feast of Nativity, good tidings!
Of our Lord and his epiphany, good tidings!
This day the sun of righteousness, good tidings!
Hath appeared amongst men, good tidings!
This day the pure, holy Virgin, good tidings!
Gave birth to the immortal king, good tidings!
This day angels came down from heaven, good tidings!
With us they bless the immortal king, good tidings!

We Armenians have completely identified our cross with our soul....We have all shared in its experience and kept it alive throughout our existence. We have painted it with our own blood. As a result, just as the Bible was translated into Armenian, the cross has been “translated” directly into our hearts and into our spiritual life. It is truly us. Living with the cross in the 20th century—not living with it as if it were an object on a wall, or even an object of meditation, but as our own, now, is a vital part of our Christian practice.

Full Translation: O Christ, Who art the way and the truth and the life, guide our souls to ascend from the earth into heaven.
O Jesus, door of entrance into life, make us also go in unto Thy Father and the Spirit, to sing always Thy Glory.

St. James (Hagop) of Nisibis is a 4th century Syriac-speaking bishop of the Armenian Church. Many miracles were attributed to him. His compassion for humans was embedded in his works. He is known as a saint of healing, having helped many people from physical disabilities and even paralysis. His ministry transformed the lives and hearts of many, Christians and non-Christians alike. St. James is known for his expedition to Mount Ararat during which he retrieved a piece of Noah’s Ark.
Our saints are witnesses to the mysterious thrill that comes from dedicating oneself unconditionally and wholeheartedly to the Lord, even when doing so requires us to break from what is considered normal, traditional, and popular. As Christians, we are invite and reminded to do as they did: to consecrate ourselves to undertake the work mandated by Jesus—to preach, to teach, and to heal. (Read “Cherished Strangers: St. Jacob of Nisibis and Mar Awgen”)
This illumination was painted by Vartan Gasparyan at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary, NY.

The crucifixion was a universal event whose significance was not confined to a specific time or place, yet visiting the location where it happened has had a profound effect on Christian pilgrims for two millennia and counting. This past live session looked at how the location has changed over the years, and how Armenians in particular have interacted with it. Watch the full lecture on Vemkar’s YouTube channel.

Joseph is born to a family of 12 brothers. Of all of them, he is his father’s favorite, so much so that his father gifts him a colorful coat. His brothers are very jealous of him and ultimately sell him into slavery to the Egyptians. Eventually, because of Josephs ability to interpret prophetic dreams, he attains high status and power in Egypt. Decades after, when he encounters his brothers in Egypt during a time of famine and he’s in a position to provide food to them, he doesn’t exact revenge on them. Instead, he utters this most profound and virtuous statement (Genesis 50:20).

Armenians in Jerusalem traditionally use a կոչնակ (Gochnag) to call the faithful to worship interchangeably with bells. This metal or wooden plank is struck by a mallet to produce ancient vibrating melodic sounds to indicate that a liturgical service is starting. This wooden Gochnag is the only one of its kind outside of Jerusalem and is located at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary in Armonk, NY.

May we as Adam’s present children be sheltered at the foot of our cross, whatever it is. May it come to be our reality. Through it may we in all our experiences of death also experience what it means to become part of the new humanity intended by God from the beginning. As the Jerusalem Patriarch from whom I quoted earlier said, Let us not live with the cross as if it were an object on a wall, or even an object of meditation, but as our own, now.

Նշխար (Nshkhar) is the unleavened bread used for Holy Communion in the Armenian Church. These are made with water and flour only (no yeast!). During Badarak (Divine Liturgy), the Son of God offers himself to us as the ultimate gift, because Holy Communion is not mere bread and wine, but the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. As we receive this gift, in the same way we should be ready to share the love of God with others as our Lord commanded us.
