And his name is…..Sandy! Thanks to all who donated and voted.
Sandy recently turned five-months-old, and as you can see he really likes his greens - specifically eating bamboo. Sandy is eating more and more solid food, and beginning to nurse less and less from his mother Betsy - a key step in his development.
Bamboo makes up the bulk of the diet for both Red Pandas and Giant Pandas in the wild. The loss of their bamboo forest habitats, usually to agricultural development, is the biggest threat to their survival. Red Pandas are an endangered species, with perhaps less than 5,000 remaining in the wild.

Look who went out exploring for the first time yesterday afternoon! Our little Red Panda cub headed outside to hang out with his mom Betsy and taste some bamboo. As you can clearly see, the little guy is very good at climbing. We expect the cub to continue to venture into the outside exhibit more frequently as the weather turns colder.

Red panda Betsy is doing a great job raising her cub, which is now five weeks old. Our animal care staff remains hand-off, allowing Betsy to do all the work of raising the cub. Red panda babies depend on their mothers until they are about six months old, at which point they begin to transition to solid food.
