Daisy was hit by a car last weekend and was presented to me unconscious with internal bleeding and suspect pulmonary contusions. She also has a suspect brachial plexus avulsion and had* a dislocated hip (now repaired with surgery). I once told someone “I only work when I’m at work.” I felt super guilty after like “was that too much?” But for real, I had just traveled for around 24 hours and had evacuated my home because of a hurricane. Walked into my mom’s house and boom, vet question. Like, I just got here and just met you. Please give me a second to maybe put my belongings down??
Anywho, this applies to all my professionals out there. Boundaries are key and I’m just starting to learn how to set them, but they are 100% improving my quality of life.

Be kind ✌️ Hits home after my last overnight shift when someone who didn’t understand veterinary medicine told me I should do surgery on their dog even though they couldn’t afford surgery and after care. This isn’t human medicine. Not everyone has pet insurance. And unfortunately, no matter how mean you are, it doesn’t change the fact that we can’t do surgery for free. Period.

Heat strokes are some of the WORST cases I see as an emergency vet. Most common in brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, frenchies, pugs, etc.) Don’t delay if you think your dog had a heat stroke event.
