An incredible Maya portrait vessel of the Old God from the Peten area of Guatemala, circa 500 AD to 800 AD. This piece measures 6” tall and is beautifully sculpted.
He wears the age lines of the Old God with a downturned mouth and pierced ears. There is also a band of glyphs on his forehead and temple area.
The Old God is one of the most important Maya Gods and is associated with creation as well as night and day. He is depicted with an old face and toothless mouth, as this example shows.

This hand molded piece depicts a dignitary with a large headdress, earspools, pectoral and loincloth. His face shows complex facial scarification with a goatee.
The hand molded examples such as this are considered by many to be the pinnacle of Maya sculptural ceramic art. The ochre, blue and salmon pigments are rare since they were applied post fire and usually are not present after burial.

An incredibly rare Olmec hacha from the Tres Zapotes area of Veracruz, Mexico, circa 1000 BC to 600 BC.
This piece measures 9” tall by 4 1/2” wide and is carved from volcanic rock. Interestingly, there are flakes of black obsidian in its proper right top.
These hachas were used in conjunction with the Mesoamerican ballgame and worn by the players on their leather yokes in the ceremonies before and after.
This example represents a demonic deity. Possibly the Wind God.

This piece measures 8 1/4” in height and is one of the finest examples I’ve had. This bi-facial blade is knapped from a beautuful grey striped Colha chert.
The blade would have been strapped into a wooden or leather handle to make it functional.

This piece measures 9 1/2” tall and is painted with grey paint over a cream base. The whistle is incorporated into its right wing where it meets the handle. It produces a light, high pitch sound.
This piece would have been used during important ceremomies and feasts.
The Chancay culture emerged from the Wari. The southern areas assimilated into the Chimu around 1400. By 1450, the entire civilization was conquered by the Inca.

This piece measures 7” tall and incised with a band of stylized birds. The rattles in the hollow legs produce a high pitch and pleasant sound. The plumbate glaze is a grey and orange color.
Plumbate is the only glaze that was used in the Pre-Columbian Americas. These pieces were created in a small area or the Guatemalan and Mexican border but traded all over the Maya areas.

These pieces were placed deep into the shaft tombs of the elite ruling class of that region. They were meant to accompany the deceased into the afterlife.
This piece belonged to the iconic and Academy Award winning actor, Anthony Quinn. He was one of the first Mexican American actors to win that award!
Mr Quinn was a collector as well as an accomplished sculpter in his own right.
