Learning bookbinding at Editions Studio in Seattle!
If you're a collector of beautiful notebooks like I am then you know how dangerous this new skill is cause now I'm ignoring my existing stack of notebooks and journals and am planning all the shiny new ones I could make 😄🥹

“Two, four, six, eight, Who do you appreciate?” We’ve all heard or even chanted this song, at least this version of it. But with a few choice changes it becomes something else entirely.
“As a relic of the early-20th-century push for sportsmanship, the “appreciate” chant has staying power. But that power isn’t always used for good. As Elizabeth Eckford, one of the “Little Rock Nine,” entered Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957, the crowd of angry segregationists chanted: “Two, four, six, eight, we don’t want to integrate.”
In 1961 students at the University of Georgia deployed “two, four” to protest campus desegregation; in 1962, racists at the University of Mississippi used it on James Meredith. Like many children, this playground jingle doesn’t always do what it’s told.” -Slate
Slate has a great article about its history, read more: https://slate.com/human-interest/2018/06/2-4-6-8-the-history-of-two-four-six-eight-who-do-we-appreciate.html

On the last day of Black History month it seemed the most fitting to share my show statement from my time at Editions in Seattle.
Usually I try to make my show and project statements as stoic as possible.
Not this one.
It felt important to not mask the emotions that came up while researching and working on this project.

Testing the RIBtype stamping tool and its teeny tiny type.
I used these to hand stamp each print as a reference to the school stamps teachers use when they grade papers.

In 1964 a WALB reporter asked people on the street their opinion of the proposed civil rights bill in Albany, Georgia.

One of my favorite things to do during my residency with Editions was to raid the library.
That's where I found this book called Pressing Issues: Voices for Justice in the Book Arts which covers an exhibition by Bronner Booksellers & Gallery of 100+ artist books and prints dealing with activism and protest.
Here are just a few of the impactful pieces from the catalog.

PART 5, I walk you through our little haunted house. Any guesses on Justin's costume?
Super excited for what this space can do and to share more of it 🤩. Can't wait for next year's Halloween!
