Christmas is the most popular holiday in Croatia, with traditions that vary by region.
Here in Dubrovnik, there are some traditions unique to the former republic, and some that are shared with the rest of Croatia.

Dubrovnik has perhaps one of the biggest Badnjak (Christmas Eve) celebrations in Croatia. People fill the old town wearing their nicest clothes to sing, drink, and be merry.
๐ถ KOLENDA ๐ถ
This is a tradition native to Dubrovnik, which consists of going from house to house singing on Christmas Eve. Not only to kids do this, but groups of friends will go house to house drinking, singing, and eating all night.
๐BAKALAR ๐
Bakalar (cod fish) is a potato and fish dish served on Christmas Eve, when people donโt eat meat or dairy. Many other places in Croatia also prepare this dish, as well as other fish dishes.
๐ฅฌ ZELENA MENESTRA ๐ฅฌ
This Dubrovnik dish dates back to the 1400s! Zelena menestra (green stew) consists of boiled green cabbage and smoked ham hock, and is served often on Christmas Day. The meal originated in Konavle and they even have cookings competitions a part of the โscents of Christmasโ festivities in town.
