I had to learn this lesson the hard way - There’s nothing wrong with holding on to the project until it’s been paid for. In fact, you shouldn’t do any work until it’s paid for. The deposit is for the thinking work, then another disbursement should be scheduled before production to cover that work, and the final payment is more a courtesy for the client.
