Climate change is really affecting our trees 😯⛈️🌳
During a storm this past March, botanical safety teams were monitoring tree health on the grounds and actually captured this tree falling. While we weren’t open to the public when this happened, it is the primary reason we close our gardens during storm events.
This was a healthy tree, but its root system had grown shallow after years of drought. With more than 40 inches of rain recorded this past winter, the soil saturation at the roots combined with the weight of a heavy canopy meant the tree could no longer hold itself up.
While this tree could not be saved, there are others at The Huntington that have fallen safely and are thriving as a horizontal trees. Check out our Stories to learn about a rare native species of oak that has lived more than a decade on the ground. #climatechange #LearnOnTiktok #savethetrees #planttok
