BIPOC Neurodivergent (AuDHD/GAD) Woman, Educator & Advocate - Disabled Spoonie ♾

About a week ago, I accidentally ended up sobbing while watching a YouTube reaction video to "What was I made for?" By Billie Eilish from the new Barbie Movie Soundtrack. Immediately afterwards, I wrote out my own reaction to the song and the deeper parallels of Barbie to my lived experience and cried some more before finally turning myself into a #Barbie (Late DX AUDHD Barbie, 35 Years in the making, Baby!) Read my unexpectedly vulnerable take at the link in my bio. #WhatWasIMadeFor #AuDHD #Masking #BillieEillish #LateDx created by Ana Maria Nunez-Gonz with Ana Maria Nunez-Gonz’s original sound

As a hyperlexic theater kid who was late diagnosed AuDHD, I experience a level of communication frustration that baffles me and my Neurotypical counterparts. They see someone really intelligent who knows a lot and clearly can speak in ways that sound very intelligent as well. They can't conceive of the idea that the same person who fits that description can't understand the subtext of what they are saying. I can only assume that they think a person that smart must be purposely pretending not to understand which is just... WTF?? Why would anyone pretend not to understand nearly everything on a regular basis and get into arguments and disagreements without even knowing what's wrong?????? Ughhhhh

AuDHD Hispanic adult female with tan skin, brown eyes, and dark brown hair in pigtail braids wearing noise cancelling headphones and a black sleeveless top with multicolored flowers on it looking down at her phone's keyboard while typing sounds play in the background. As the sounds play, the following words are animated to appear on screen:

"The hyperlexic theater kid frustration of knowing all the words and a thesaurus full of alternates to explain yourself and/or "translate" Neurotypical communication but still not succeeding because words and their social cues do not match and they refuse to say what they mean because it's "common sense" and I guess they think we're pretending not to understand them in purpose? Yeah cause that's fun for us.... "

Here's an excerpt from my piece on the parallels of Barbie, the movie and the cultural icon, and my late diagnosed AuDHD experience:

"Over the years I've had different ideas about Barbie and what she was supposed to mean to young girls and overarching society. For me, she was fashion and the possibility of adventure. She got to have a car and fabulous outfits. Neurodivergent play is misunderstood by a lot of people. So I don't remember crafting any sort of specific story for my dolls. It never seemed like the thing to do. She had her own iconic status because she was just cool, innately. Like if someone probably knew how to do whatever was necessary to be successful and amazing, it was Barbie. I think, looking back, she was THE ultimate mask to aspire to."
