Here's our new approach to Aotearoa New Zealand Histories (ANZH) through completely integrating te reo Māori when teaching and learning about iwi Māori history! Our retelling of Māui me te Ika Nui (Māui and the Giant Fish) is available in te reo Māori plus we've also got a bilingual version with English translations here: https://youtu.be/ZZpGw6lVJX8 Learn more now about the formation of whenua here in Aotearoa.
Ākonga and kaiako that have completed Level 1 of our programme for schools will be able to understand all of the te reo Māori in this video. We've ensured we've used simple sentence structures so you can give retelling any other kōrero a go with your own tamariki mokopuna!
We're excited to share our new way of retelling pūrākau (traditional Māori narratives and oral histories) using te reo Māori that is at Level 1 (of the Te Aho Arataki Marau mō te Ako i Te Reo Māori - Kura Auraki
Curriculum Guidelines for Teaching and Learning Te Reo Māori in English-medium Schools: Years 1-13).
Schools that are part of our Te Puna Reo Māori online language learning programme can access a huge range of these pūrākau and over 900 other learning, waiata and book videos. Our online learning platform teaches school staff, students and their whānau every week of the school year!
We position te ao Māori at the centre of schools to progress learners and kaiako through the curriculum levels and enact Te Tiriti o Waitangi in schools around the country - how do we do this? By ensuring te reo Māori is valued, upheld and progressed like every other learning area of the NZ Curriculum.
